Advocacy

Once mothers have made the decision to breastfeed their infants, it’s crucial that the barriers to successful breastfeeding be as few as possible. Currently, mothers commonly face barriers such as hospital policies that discourage breastfeeding, health insurance that excludes coverage of needed breastfeeding services and pumps, and work environments that do not allow mothers the time and space necessary to express their breastmilk. Addressing these barriers is a major focus of our work.

The Breastfeeding Task Force, working with community partners, has championed legislation that would mandate HMO coverage of breastfeeding services and pumps, as well as legislation that would require state agencies to inform pregnant women about current lactation accommodation laws. To learn more about these important pieces of breastfeeding legislation, and to learn about what you can do to help, please sign up for our newsletter/action alerts.
