Promoting Breastfeeding in the Early Postpartum: Research, Theory and Practice

This one day seminar is designed to offer participants an opportunity to gain knowledge about the impact of common labor, delivery and hospital routines on breastfeeding outcomes. Participants will learn strategies about how to teach mothers to breastfeed, including how to assess for correct latch-on position and how to overcome common early problems. Other areas covered will include medical problems of the mother that are contraindications to breastfeeding and common medical problems of the baby in the immediate postpartum period that relate to breastfeeding. Strategies that have proven effective in preventing or minimizing these problems will be discussed, as will the impact of common hospital routines on breastfeeding.

This one day seminar is designed to offer participants an opportunity to gain knowledge about topics currently of great interest in the lactation community.  Confusion still exists on what a mother can take and still safely breastfeed.  Learn the reality of medication transferring to breastmilk and up to date resources to use.  With the increase in inductions and multiples, learn what risks exist for the late pre-tern infant and how we can support the breastfeeding couplet.  We will discuss how to evaluate the validity of research, so you can pinpoint studies you want to use to support your evidence-based practice.  Lastly we will discuss hot topics in milk banking, how to refer potential donors and who uses donor milk..

UCSD offers several programs in lactation. The Lactation Educator Counselor program is held thru out California. The CLEC is a 40 hour course that typically meets for 3 days and then for 2 days about 6 weeks later. This format allows for maximum retention of information and makes it easier to schedule time from work to attend. Baby’s Perspective by Kittie Frantz, RN, CPNP- PC for doulas and infant postpartum care providers (baby “nurses” ), lactation consultants, or anyone who is interested to learn more. Offers 18 “L” IBCLC units. The course teaches breastfeeding from the baby’s perspective for those who care for the mother and baby in the early postpartum period. The class discusses how to meet the mother’s needs as well as the infant’s needs in preserving breastfeeding goals for the family. Click here to learn more.
